Description

Father Inama writes about how he traveled using many different modes of transportation, including trains and ships. He states that he only saw four Germans and the rest were Catholics. This observation is interesting to me because the reason why Father Inama came to the United States in the first place was to translate for all the German-Catholics, but then he goes on to write that there weren't many Germans! However, he adds that perhaps the reason for this is that the Germans may have opted out of such an expensive trip traveling by boat and chosen a cheaper option, such as by railroad. Another interesting thing to point out from Father Inama's diary entry is that he paid $15 for transportation! I realize that doesn't seem like a lot now, but back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, $15 was a lot of money. Thus, explaining why some of the German population may have chose a cheaper way to travel.
